DAY 5 – tRAIN IN EVANGELISM—GO ON MISSION
8 But you
shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be
witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of
the earth.”
Acts
1:8
To be a member of any Southern Baptist
church, one should almost be required to quote from memory the passage above
and the one we will use tomorrow. Both are commonly called “The Great
Commission.” Southern Baptists are renowned for a lot of things, but most of
all, we are known for our cooperation with other churches in the Cooperative
Program, sending out one of the greatest numbers of vocational missionaries to
the world.
Our church and denomination send
missionaries to the world through an agency known as the International Mission
Board (IMB). We also send out missionaries to the United States and its
territories as well as Canada through what is called the North American Mission
Board (NAMB). We also promote the ministries within the state of Texas through
Texas Baptists, also called the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
First Baptist Killeen currently allocates 9.6
percent of its general offering to the Cooperative Program to support state,
national, and international ministries and missions. We also designate another
1 percent of our general offerings to support the Bell Baptist Association. As
a result, more than a tenth of our “general offerings” go to missions through
the Cooperative Program alone. That means if you give $100 to the offering
without designating it to go to a certain ministry, $10.60 will automatically go
to missions outside of our local church.
Additionally, we support a variety of other
missions and causes including the Killeen Food Care Center, world hunger
relief, HOPE pregnancy center, the Bell County J.A.I.L. ministry, a church
ministry in Mexico, and training for missions in our children’s Royal
Ambassadors and Girls in Action ministries.
First Baptist Church also has missions
committee which directs funds to go to missions, both local and abroad, to
encourage mission-minded projects in our church.
We call the passages today the “Great
Commission” not only because Christ commissioned us to tell others about
Christ, but also because together, we are co-missionaries with Him in spreading
the good news, the “gospel” of Christ’s salvation, around the world.
Last week, we wrote down our “salvation
testimonies” of how Christ saved us, individually. This week, we need to
learn how to share God’s Plan of Salvation, which shows how God can save
others. We share this plan to others in obedience to that Great Commission.
Look up in your Bible the following verses
and write them down. I would even encourage you to memorize these simple yet
profoundly salvational verses:
Romans 3:23--______________________________________
John 3:16--________________________________________
Romans 10:9-10--__________________________________
Romans 10:13--_____________________________________
With these
verses, we can share the A, B, C Plan of Salvation, that we must first admit that all of us have
sinned and fall short of God’s glory. We must be willing to turn from our sins
and turn to God. (Romans 3:23)
Second, we must believe that Christ died to
take away the penalty of our sins. This belief is not only intellectual believing
but also spiritual receiving that forgiveness into our lives. (John 3:16)
Third, we must call upon the name of the Lord,
confessing Him as our Savior and Lord, and asking Him to come to reside in our
lives, changing us with eternal life. (Romans 10:9, 10, 13)
